They sat at the table, the remains of a huge dinner in front of them. Andrea still tingled all over from their training session. She knew she was smiling like an idiot still from how good she felt, and she didn’t care. Jan had volunteered to cook, manning her stove as if he had perfect knowledge of everything. “I spent some of my day watching videos,” he told her when she remarked on his expertise. “Your food preparation is very simple—there are not so many different components as my people have.”
“Maybe you can build us a kitchen like what you have at home,” Andrea playfully suggested.
Jan laughed, “I believe some of the components would—you say, raise eyebrows?” Andrea nodded. His grasp of vernacular and idiom was growing by leaps and bounds every day. “When I am gainfully employed as a human man, I want to take you to a restaurant.”
Andrea laughed, “Why is that?”
Jan smiled, turning off the stove and quickly distributing the chicken and sauce onto waiting plates. “I have watched TV shows of your chef, Tony Barbaine. He seems a very perceptive man. But he goes to many places on this planet, and he eats many meals at restaurants. I would like to try these foods for myself.”
“Well, we’ll have to go to one where you can get grain free,” Andrea said. “Oh—we’ll take you to a paleo restaurant!” That sparked a conversation about what “paleo” referred to, and from there, as they ate, a discussion of their future life together. It all hinged on the last step of Jan’s plan to get free of his alien colleagues.
Jan had been far more able to focus than Andrea. He had nearly completed his preparations for inserting himself into human life without even leaving the house. “It is a simple matter,” he told her, shrugging off her amazement. “Your security measures are very basic, compared to my people’s.” He had created an identity for himself in the government’s records, with a complete history that he had made up based on stories he looked up about immigrants. “It will be more difficult forging the academic credentials,” he said, frowning slightly. “If nothing else, I have sufficient resources to put a bribe in someone’s hands.”
“You’re going to bribe someone into giving you a degree?”
Jan grinned, “Why not?”
Andrea knew it was going to be a late night. Jan’s people were constantly calling him, eager to leave the planet. The longer they lingered, the greater their chances of discovery. Jan told Andrea they would have to return to the area where he had found her in order to complete the scheme; there was a transport there, and it would have to be destroyed in the process of enacting his “killed by a human” story.
“You didn’t tell me you had a transport,” Andrea said, frowning.
“How else would I bring my specimen back to the ship? It is in orbit near your moon.” Andrea frowned again. She hadn’t considered that; she had somehow pictured a giant space-going vessel, waiting somewhere hidden on the planet.
